Did soviet soldiers charge even if no one was there?

I was told that (I presume in the early 20th century, WWI WWII time), that soviet soldiers were given rations, which was a quarter liter vodka, a piece of pork with alot of fat on it, and that they would consume that and charge, even if there was no enemy there. Is there any truth to this? Can I get a source please? Thanks
